I have been a graphic designer for the past fifteen years working in every area of print design; brochures, posters, logos, billboards and the list goes on. I had dabbled over the years with web, creating a few websites for friends or small businesses and created banner ads and small graphics for an occasional website. I had the pleasure of creating email documents and landing pages at my previous employer until the economy sank and they let me go. The graphic design industry started to explode into the internet and I thought I would take this opportunity to go back to school and learn more about the world of web design. Plus, this would help me be a better designer and open me up for more opportunities as a print and web designer.
Not entirely a career change but along the line of a career enhancement with the idea that I could promote myself as the go to guy who can do a bit of everything for your business.
The past jobs I had been drawn to have been Graphic Design related. Anything to do with print design is what I had looked for. I steered away from the web jobs as I had not the right skills yet.
More, I have learned so much more than I would have on my own reading books, doing the occasional website or even talking with other people in the business. Most of all the knowledge of all the staff and their backgrounds have been well worth my enrollment at SCCC.
I am a designer first of which I enjoy most. The challenge of building a website from scratch with all the steps of Info Architecture, Wireframes, Visual Studies really excites me. The whole process is a lot of fun and the finished product is well worth the work. Actual programming, administration can be left to the professionals. I have met a whole lot of great students with all sorts of different skill levels that I hope to use when the time is needed.
My main goal is to find a job that will allow me to dabble in print and web design. I realize this may be a lot to wish for as most print designers do not do web work. I hope to make my future employer realize that they have a talent who can do both. If I decide to focus on freelancing i hope to promote myself locally in my neighborhood and hopefully spread the word that I am available for either print or web design work
