The perfect IT job...this job would have to be an enhancement to my career already in Graphic Design. I have worked for many years in print and have slowly watched the internet take off and new jobs come to the forefront. If you had asked me this question ten years ago I would have brushed right by it and ignored the idea of an answer. Now, all I want to do is play with these new skills and contribute to my team.
The job would have to be in downtown Seattle in one of the highrises. The work would have to be enjoyable and rewarding with room for developement of my skill-set. If my new company believed in educational growth, I would be the first to sign up. I am not looking at being slapped on the back and praised but I do want great collaboration between departments and teammates. If I could be given a few assignments with the perfect team and all sorts of time to create and build (wishful thinking) I would be happy. But along with happiness comes boredom, I hate to be bored, give me work and the faith that I can get it done on time and under budget. The skills that I have aquired would be utilized consistently. My print design skills would adapt to creating print materials to match the web ideas or visa versa.
Location:
Seattle or the Eastside. I will also work from home as a freelancer if needed. I would much prefer to stay in downtown Seattle.
Work Environment:
If I could have the right environment to work in it would be a small to mid-sized firm that cares about their employees. Yes, the work and clients are first as they should be, but working long hours that do not really result into much gain is not for me. I have done this type of work and it is exhausting and brain draining. The space would be open with no cubicles above 4ft and creative colors and artwork on the walls for inspiration.
Freelance from home is also another option that I do enjoy. I have freelanced for the past ten years on and off and have worked in many fine firms big and small. I have even found my own clients and worked from home. One of the drawbacks of freelance is the quite, no one to bounce ideas off of.
Workplace:
There would be an area for discussion of the projects and great team collaboration with writers, designers and the client account departments. There is always a strong separation between accounts or even the graphic designers towards the web designers. I hope to break this trend as I have my foot in both sides.
Hours/Work Structure:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 – 5:00 or 9:00 – 6:00pm would be suffice for a work schedule. When you break into the later evening hours, as a family guy I would not see my daughter. But the occasional need for overtime is not a problem, even better if I can take the work home with me.
Telecommuting is an option as I do have a good system and the ability to work from home or a coffee shop. The trend is for more working from home, especially for web designers as all proofing can be done via the computer. Not like the world of print design where you are constantly printing items out or building a comp for presentation.
Typical Work Day:
A typical workday, hmmm, well first off the daily meeting would have to be once a week meeting to catch up on what and where the projects are. Do you need help, are we on time etc. Of course it would depend on the project. I can’t say right now how a typical workday would be in web design as I have not experienced this yet. Mainly great collaboration with teammates and your work environment is safe and clean and is ready for anything.
Nature of Work:
Create, build, maintain the project at hand. Research of new ideas/skills that other teammates can offer to me. I would also search the internet for new tips and tricks in the industry.
